Where to teach English abroad?

Where to teach English abroad?
My fiance and I are looking to teach English abroad in 2010. Our main purpose is to make enough money to live and travel while we're there. We'd prefer not to become certified as this can get expensive. We were thinking South Korea but now are hearing lots of horror stories of corrupt companies not paying teachers. Anyone have any experience in this field?

I heard that Dubai is great. I know a couple of teachers that started there and one is now in Germany.

I have two friends who taught in China -- great experiences, but not sure how much money they made. Having traveled to Korea a couple of times, I cannot recommend the people there. (Sorry to sound xenophobic). We were not made to feel welcome, we were stared at on the street, and people even took pictures of us from cars. (Our family is blond, blue eyed.) We found a very "Korea is for Koreans" attitude there. Just our experience. Good luck wherever you land. It's a great thing you're doing!

Why do refugees pick USA, UK, Canada, OZ, NZ over rich Japan, S.Korea, Taiwan & Singapore?

Why do refugees pick USA, UK, Canada, OZ, NZ over rich Japan, S.Korea, Taiwan & Singapore?
Why do so many people trying to leave behind miserable conditions in nations in Latin America, Africa, Southeast Asia, former Eastern Bloc nations pick the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and several Western European nations to make a new start, but they don't choose rich nations such as South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and Japan? I know that South Korea now has some Nigerians, but generally most from the Third World would gravitate towards say, Australia or New Zealand before picking a rich Asian nation. Why is this? Why is the West a magnet for people of different races, but not the rich Asian nations that could take in immigrants as we do? Why is the West welcoming, but not Asia despite having money? The DPRK is an unusual situation, its refugees risk their lives to cross the border into China where they risk repatriation by Chinese authorities. If they can get to an embassy, the most logical place to send a North Korean is, of course, South Korea, which grants them citizenship as they are the same people. I would consider Japan rich based on having the third highest GDP in the world, a per-capita income over $30,000 (not that high compared to the price of living) and a generally high standard of living as surveyed by most leading organizations. The problem with Japan is, its long recession, its debt and the cost of living, but it is definitely one of the most economically developed nations on Earth and the Yen is an important currency.

because australia is the best country ever for them. they get here and have to wait a minimal amount of time in detention centers then boom full citizenship, money and housing. in most other countries theyd get shot or sent back where they came from!
2 :
There are refugees in the Far East, especially from the DPRK.
3 :
They are economic refugees and we don't want the liabilities. We are forced to take them by the United Nations as part of the United Nations quota allocation.
4 :
If they pick OZ, it's because they like being tall and aren't particularly afraid of witches. A big destination for those living in black and white cultures.
5 :
I believe that the reason they tend to gravitate to the specified countries is for a greater sense of freedom. While the Asian countries you mentioned are well off, they are not as well known as the former countries for their freedom, which is something people crave.
6 :
From where I stand it would appear that the UK is more than a fairly attractive place to get something for sweet ferkall if you pretend to be a refugee. We're fast becoming swamped by the dross of Eastern Europe & Asia.
7 :
It is a difference in culture. Many Eastern countries are far stricter as to who they're willing to admit as citizens, and certain Asian countries, Japan especially, are very homogeneous. They are very patriotic and take a great amount of pride in their heritage, and this can make them less welcoming to foreigners, which in turn gives foreign immigrants fewer opportunities in the work force. Please understand, I am not criticizing these nations in any way. I am just saying that they have different ways of looking at immigration. Also, the USA tends to attract immigrants because of its history of immigration. Since its beginning as a nation, the US has portrayed the image of a country built by people from many different backgrounds, whereas Eastern countries tend to pride their success on the hard work and rich histories and traditions of their own descendants. And of course, geography plays a role in the destination of immigrants. People from Central and South America are more likely to cross into the U.S because of its proximity, while people from underdeveloped European satellite countries are more likely to choose the nearby UK.
8 :
Well for starters Japan is certainly not Rich as you stated, and have many of the same troubles we do.I think most refugees find Countries with decent human rights and many more Freedoms more appealing than just having a Country with monetary wealth. I think out of any of those countries listed Canada Australia, and the United States have similar laws and customs that appeal to a higher quality of life than just being able to find a job sooner.........................
9 :
Actually, there's starting a pattern of people moving TO those countries from western countries. Many higher educated Americans and Europeans, for example are taking jobs over in those places, because the job market is more plentiful. Many of the Koreans, Taiwanese, and Japanese in the U.S. would love to move back, in fact, but the cost of living is way too high. Also, if they have school age children, the shock of the different education system is a little over-whelming.

Because then that would stop people from buying medical treatment and drugs. -Disease is also used as a popultion control -Homosexuality is wrong and inhumane -Cats are not simple house pets, they are shapeshifters watching our every move. -Reptilians are possibly real and contribute or control the freemasons -David icke is not a phony -We need a president who will speak the truth before they kill him, so the people will wake up and revolt and start the revolution. -Overpopulation is going to be a major issue in the future, if we make it till then -The medias obssesion with celebertys is pathetic -Religion causes conflict and war, if you trace it back far enough -The government knew and possibly was involved with the september 11 attacks -There is for sure life on other planets, considering there are over 21,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 different galaxys -China is eventually going to invade Taiwan -Russia is eventually going to invade every country in the CIS who dissagrees with them -North Korea will attack South Korea -Everyone who thinks Marijuana is bad for your health is misinformed and have been lied to. -How could Noah have gathered 2 of every animal on the ark? You bring manufacturing back home and we will kick butt. Then we can give a little out again to other countries to do. A little I said.

i really like.. God could possibly be an alien who brought life to earth and Russia is up to something.

Overall, I'd say much more smart than crazy. Some if your ideals are over the top, but you've got your head on straight. -People of African descent do have a right to be offended when persons of other backgrounds call them the N word, just as anyone has a right to be upset if someone attempts to offend them with a racial slur. Yet, it's not what someone calls you...it's what you respond to. -Maybe some of the stories in the Bible aren't meant to be taken literally. Maybe it was two kinds of every animal in that particular area at that particular time, and maybe there weren't that many then. -God is not an alien. Life had to have begun by a force bigger than what we so far are able to determine, and you can call that whatever you want; God...Abiogenesis - whatever. -Bush isn't the mastermind behind the 9/11 attacks; His cronies were. -Obama actually does not fit the description of the anti-Christ if you do a little more research. -There might be a magnetic pole shift in 2012; so far it's just a theory.

"JFK was not assassinated by a lone gunman, the secret society that runs the government did it." This is my favorite. The Truth. Johnny Roselli killed President Kennedy from the grassy knoll. He was not alone. The other gunman was in a closet, which had a window, on the third floor of the Texas Book Depository. Lee Harvey Oswald was standing in the door way of said Depository as the motorcade turn the curve right in front of him. He was getting ready to run.......a decoy. I don't believe you are nuts. Yes, you have an inquiring mind. I agree with more of what you wrote than disagree. By the way, Jimmy Hoffa's body is in the foundation of what is now a day care center. It's true.

"Crazy" and "smart" aren't mutually exclusive...wait...did I just figure out the answer?

Why is bandwidth in the US so slow?

Why is bandwidth in the US so slow?
I currently have Verizon FiOS which is great, but when I go to my friend's apartment a couple miles away, he is on DSL with a latency that is high enough to make me puke. It is not just his problem, I am aware that this is a national problem. Even though the Obama administration pledged money for bandwidth, I am still wondering why ISP's have not upgraded their lines to fiber, installed new servers, etc etc to help improve bandwidth like in South Korea?
