Why are Americans so mean to immigrants?

Why are Americans so mean to immigrants?
Hi all, I just had a burning feeling this afternoon when I found out that many people I know from my school actually hated Asian immigrants and even wanted them to go back to their countries. I strongly felt that I must tell the truth not only about Asian immigrants but also all other immigrants from different countries who must be by now feeling tortured and discriminated like Black Americans did 40 years ago in this very same place. I found no other perfect place than this website to tell this because I have my life and I can't reveal myself in public. I am one of the millions of FOB (Fresh Off the Boat, which means, by one of the definitions, an Asian immigrant who was not born in American and moved to here recently) high school studnets living in America. About 2 years ago, I and my family went through all the legal process to become a legal resident who ARE LEGALLY ALLOWED to LIVE in UNITED STATES. My father was a very well-known businessman and we experienced all the wealthiest possible style of life in South Korea. My father was one of the extremely few people in Korea who could own Mercedes S550. And you know how hard it is to own a Mercedes in South Korea due to excessively higher tax and gas price. I can tell you why my family made a decision to come to US. It was because of a financial crisis that we were unaware of and eventually destroyed my family's wealth. And you CANNOT say 'GO BACK TO YOUR COUNTRY IF YOU DON'T WANT TO LIVE" to us not any more when you think about your ancestors ALSO came here because of almost the same reason. I am especially telling you people who have never met Asian Immigrants and spent most of the time blaming them for stealing precious job opportunities. America was NOT your land. Your ancestors did NOT live here in the first place. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean and settled here. Why did they come here? Well I guess you already know if you have a high school diploma. It was inevitable. You CANNOT expect what's going to happen in the future. Not even tomorrow. I have to say I was in the situation in which my family had no choice but to come here. And I am really sorry to be a thorn in you eyes. And I am really sorry that I am living in the place where you guys don't want us to live. But one thing is true. We, Asian immigrants and all other immigrants from all around the world, are going through very hard time in here to settle in this totally new place just like your ancestors had very strenuous time for first couple of years after they came to here. One more thing is true. We are not stealing your job opportunities. We are just doing our best to SURVIVE in this JUNGLE. And this will give you an explanation for what you guys have observed from most Asian people in the school. We look all the same like people with down syndrome. I know you guys are making fun of us like that. We are very awkward and shy. Every move we make, every word we say might seem to be really funny to you guys. We are always looking at the book, without saying any word and just looking at the book all the time. And the top student in your math and science class is Asian and they are pissing you off. It feels like they stole your grades. I know. But I am telling you that we do it only because we want to survive in this country. And that is the only way for us to survive. As you might already know we are not good at sports, we are not good at socilizing with other people. All we take care of is just keeping a good grade and I am telling you that is the only way. My family is going through a very hard time. Financially we are being tortured now. I miss the old days when I lived in Korea, having all those wealth. But we lose all. All the money slipped out of our hands. But we pay taxes. Even more taxes than you guys have to pay because we are not American citizens yet. I can't vote and I don't mean I want to vote. And I don't want to vote because it will bring much further controvercy. I pay tons of taxes. You guys can pay a little bit of money when you go to the state college or community college. Buy did you know that we pay the tuition 5 times more than you tuition? We pay almost the same amount of money as tuition fee the IVY league colleges require you to pay. We are the people who keep America wealthy. We are the people who make American the Number One, the most powerful country in the world. But, Why are you guys so mean to us? Why do you guys want us to go back? Think about all the reasons why your ancestors had to come here.

4 :
Okay, I didn't read a word you say - not because you're an immigrant but because you're ranting, not asking a question. Anyway, my parents are American and Brazilian so that refutes the idea that Americans don't like immigrants.
5 :
I have no problem with LEGAL immigrants. Illegal one's need to be either deported or indentured and then deported.
6 :
arnie is a white immigrant. native americans were too nice to the illegals.
7 :
they are ignorant. plain and simple. they don't understand that the u.s. as we know it today is RUN by immigrants. No immigrants=no burritos! I am an american immigrant to canada, and they treat me different too. So I feel for all immigrants everywhere. It's stupid and ignorant, and stereotypes exist everywhere, whether we like it or represent them or not. Be proud of who you are and where you came from and F anyone who has anything to say about it. Hold your head up high and say "at least i'm not from around HERE!" =)

i'm not mean to immigrants, partially has to do that where i live there is a mixture of various immigrants(mexico, vietnam, korean, etc) i will never tell people to go back to their country in which also mistreats them and cant give people the quality of live that they get here. sad to see that everyone in the u.s was at one point an immigrant, very hypocritical dont you think people have come here for the american dream, and our country is fcuking hypocritical ex: ww2 saving the jews from genocide but allow blacks to get killed, japanese to be in concentration camps, allow whites to beat senseless to mexican americans and get away with it, not giving minorities their rights strange
9 :
it's because korean-americans earn the highest income of all minorities in the united states....be proud of your heritage man. who cares what anyone thinks? are they that important? korean women are gorgeous too..... just keep studying
10 :
Most of us have no problem with legal immigrants. It's the illegals that should be eliminated.

"Why are you guys so mean to us?" Dude, stop generalizing. I'm actually shocked that you say most of your classmates are saying this. I have nothing against immigrants, from anywhere. My step-mom and step-sister just moved from the Philippines to here [America] anyway. My dad about 25 years ago came from Ireland. Everyone here has immigrant ancestors, so the people who are against you are just naive, ignorant idiots.
12 :
well now is not the time to be an immigrant - legal or otherwise in a country that has a failing economy sorry
13 :
ok i am black and we all no black people were brought over here as slaves so that means that we DIDT WANT TO COME OVER HERE. we even got sold into slavery by our own KIND so that is rough but what makes me mad is that people come over and act like it will be better when it really wont be. then you have people who come over here ILLEGALLY which is bad enough because when they do they do bad things ( i watched a show so i know what i am talking about) ok i am sorry what you are going through but i feel nothing for you guys. you guys made that decision and thought it would be good and now you pay just like black people did in slavery. and everyone goes through some type of racism in there life so suck it up and stop feeling sorry for yourself

People who criticize you or your race don't understand that the immigrants are the very people who were responsible for america's growth in the past. I have experienced that some americans are extremely arrogant and have bad attitude which they are extremely proud of! They just cant find ground, can they?
15 :
That was deep, I'm sorry that you have experienced so much discrimination in your life, no one deserves that. That is the harsh reality of America though, while it is the land of opportunity you also have ignorant uneducated people who generalize one group of people and have their opinions, and stick with it. I'm glad that you went through the legal process, that's very commendable! It also depends where you live as well, the more educated the city you live, the more accepting, (usually). I would never yell those horrible things that those rude people yelled at you, EVER! But try to surround yourself with people who have the same common interests as you, it could build self-esteem. Don't worry about what people say, hold your head up high, and I hope that America will be more accepting of you & your family, I hope your financial crisis gets better, and that people learn to love & accept you :]! I hope this helped!

MOST of the Fobs that attend my school are rude, mean, selfish, and they walk around like they own the place. I know most of us are being stereotypical, but it is partly your fault too. I'm an American born Chinese by the way.

The actual impact of immigrants is very, very difficult to determine - and it changes depending on the number of years out one is calculating. Anti-immigration - or xenophobia, fear of foreigners - is, thus, irrational. Xenophobia is fueled by discontent. It's easier to blame outsiders than do the research about what is really causing perceived hardships. Hatred of outsiders happens in many countries, not just the US. Repeat: anyone who has done research on the effect of immigration realizes that it's very, very complicated, with no clear-cut answer.

I in no way, shape or form wish for you or any other immigrant to go back to their country. In fact, we were all immigrants at one point. What I don't like however is illegal immigrants. If you want to come here fine, great even, just do it the right way and eventually pay taxes because it's only fair. Also, I would like it if (in time) immigrants learned to speak English. The reason being is because I would never move to another country without knowing or the intention or learning their language. It seems to be the respectful thing to do. I hope that you and your family do very well here and I want you to know from the bottom of my heart you are welcome here by me. I don't know if that matters but I would hope if you were back in your country and I went there for a visit or for a lifetime that I would be welcome. Who is anyone to say they "own" the rights to a certain country or ocean... And I don't believe you are all the same, a lot of you are great at sports, intelligent and you will do great. Anyone who tells you that you and your family, or anyone doesn't "deserve" to be here, they are ignorant a** holes and I think you should just ignore them because there are plenty of people like me that think you have EVERY RIGHT to be here.. just as much as me.

We are all here for one reason or the other. I was born in America but I tell you I have not and I will never treat anyone with disrespect. We are one nation under God. You don't have to apologize for coming to America. Stay smart, proud and strive for what you came here for. The sky is the limit. Good luck!

Not every one has your problems My wife is from the Philippines but she has worked 25 years in this country with very little drama that you experience Sometimes you have to stand up for yourself and I know for a fact Korea Japan and even in the Philippines foreigners are not always treated with respect. There is no perfect world for anyone~

OK well thank you for generalizing.... I say generalizing because that is what you see now, not hatred towards immigrants... Humans classify, thats all there is to it. Its like 80% of all illegal immigrants come from Mexico... Hence the perceived notion that all illegals are Mexicans..... Most people see Asians and right away jump to H1-B and tech jobs....Nothing personal towards you.. Just generalization. Now as far as you go. You seem like you did everything legally. Right? So F anyone that gives you crap.. Seriously... Why do you need their approval.. The world is full of judgmental assholes and thats just a fact of life that you cant avoid.Did you not think that you would be looked at as an outsider when you came to the US?. Even American kids that move to new towns are casted as outsiders initially. Once again, its just a fact of life...

I hate Asian Immigrates because they always say 5 dollar when it's 5 dollars. Stop saying dollar after 1 S%^&*()*&^% of $%^&*()B*())))))*&

i don't think america is mean to immigrants. it's just that america can only hold so many people and the citizens are suppose to come first. the way things are now it seem like everyone wants to come to america and alot of the people (illegal immigrants) that do come to america take from us and make things worse. for example, where i stay there is alot of them our schools are over crowded (they've knocked down houses to build schools) and they are having more babies everyday

In the first place, we are suffering through an invasion. We have people who are coming here.. demanding welfare, committing a remarkable number of violent crimes with guns, and related to narcotics. Asia is the primary source of smack in this country, and at least some of that heroin comes out of Berma, goes through Korea and then into the cities of America. Heroin and marijuana that knocks you on your backside. But in the second place, this country worked very hard to start conforming to environmental standards. That meant one child in many cases and so as soon as that appeared, the dopers in Washington got a bribe and they decided it would be nice to increase the immigration rate by 500%, and Americans didn't want that either. And so, Americans have been thugged by their Congress into a massive immigration rate that Congress refuses to shut off. This is a bad time to be a legal immigrant, and I am sorry you have had trouble, but in fact, you should stay home and make your country better.. not come to this country and complain when you are not accepted with open arms. And when almost all of the American Citizens in this country came, they cleared land and farmed. When immigrants come to this country today, they almost always take jobs at a reduced wage and live in reduced circumstances. Immigrants actually mean cheaper wages for the Big Business People in this country, and very, very extreme bonuses for the people who run those big businesses. Needless to say, we want it stopped.

I have absolutely no issue with any immigrant from anywhere who possesses proper documentation, has a job, pays the tax, and has committed no crimes. Good day to you, sir.

Try Scotland maybe? I don't live in the US, but all this is pretty much factual.. Most americans are unaware of their countries need for foreign nationals. I'm not even going to go into this, many (by no means all) americans are just terrifyingly ignorant. They like to complain that their country is going downhill when they don't know the life of luxury they're living. People here in England are the exact same, unfortunately, except they are a lot more concealed in these thoughts. I'm not saying I'm more educated, but I am in the minority of people who actually understand and encourage migration. It's both inevitable and neccessary for humans to migrate... *head-desk*...*frustation*. On the happier side of things, though, my boyfriend is a taiwanese immigrant who has been in England for 2 years, and I don't think he has ever actually experienced any racism or discrimination =) So it's not true for every case.
