Can someone tell me what this war is about?
Gonna rant here some: I love The United States of America, I support the troops and I just wish there could be peace and all this fear would be gone. Having typed that, I don't understand this war. Could 9/11 and this current war been avoided if the U.S. was not involved in a bunch of Middle East nonsense in the first place? Could Bush have stopped 9/11 from happening if he had not been on vacation? And would things really be that horrible if the troops were withdrawn today? I love American History, but I really don't follow most of today's issues nearly as much as I follow history and I should, but history already tells me what is going on in the world today and it seems most of our wars are started by rich people wanting to make money and gain power while poor men and women are off fighting the rich people's wars. These two wars we are in right now, Vietnam, Korea, The American Civil War, etc. All seem pretty senseless to me. And let me add this very quickly so no one gets the wrong idea - Lincoln could have bought all the slaves and I don't think over 600,000 Americans dying all so the South could not have it's own nation was worth it, nor was ending slavery. Slavery would have ended on it's own in due time. Every other country ended slavery without a war. Why couldn't we have done the same? I'm not trying to change the topic and I am hardly a redneck, nor am I a lost cause neo-Reb or someone who hates his country.....I am just making a point that it seems that the media lives off fear and that we're all being played like a bunch of suckers and that human lives should be one of the first things considered before anything else. It also seems like rich people with all the power having been causing senseless wars for way too long now in this country and I wish Americans would learn from the past generation's misakes instead of repeating them. We're just going in circles it seems and we're bringing on so much violence. I am also not defending Bin Laden and his people by the way. I think it's messed up that WE have to pay for the errors our leaders make and have to live in fear of being blown up. Shoot, ever since 9/11, I've have a fear of flying. I also want to go to London at some point for a trip, but I'd be lying if I didn't add I wasn't consider because I know England has to deal with the same nonsense! I consider England to be good friends to my country and I have family that lives there and I'd like for them to have peace as well. I think American and British troops should be allowed to go home and we can go back to having peace and let the Middle East do to itself what it always has done and probably always will do and that is fight. Hey, let them have at it. Just as long as the U.S. and the U.K. are away from all that. Wrenched - Thank you for posting that and I am not trying to offend you, but I'm not religious. In fact, you just gave an example of why I believe religion is destroying the world. People are dying for NOTHING. All because some old book says to kill, you're suppose to? That's insane. How come no one has ever questioned the book? Why just be a blind follower to something you cannot prove is real? I cannot support any belief that chooses to worship a figure they cannot see or hear and destory human life all for that figure you cannot see or hear. I believe God only exists in the human mind the same way the Flying Spaghetti Monster exists in a crazy person's mind. I believe religion was invented to control society by the same rich and corrupt men who cause war to make money. I hope religion is wiped out one day and this become an athiest world. You don't see atheists killing in the same of atheism. Before anyone mentions Hitler or Stalin, those men did what they did because of who they were, not because they were atheist. The United States of America is a huge Christian nation and we have loads of violence. The middle east is another big region that is all about "God" and look how much violence they have. A belief in a God does not make you a good person. In fact, it can make you into a very evil person who sees nothing wrong with murder.

Wow this is a good question - I don't know how many answers you'll get since most people on here won't read that much. I think most of the recent conflict between the "west" (America, UK, EU, Israel, etc) comes from the Islamic countries coming into their own in terms of wealth, power and education. They were broken up into colonies under European imperialism and later made into countries by sheer luck-of-the-draw with no regards to what cultures would be living together in each country and that created a ton of internal tension there. Then the creation of Israel escalated it and caused hatred for Jews and more hatred for the west. Now the Islamic countries are gaining wealth, power and the balls to use it. They don't agree with our values and culture and they are taught that we are evil nations, which is why I think that a lot could be accomplished by understanding rather than just causing wars which re-inforce their view of us. We'll never get anywhere just starting wars. Both western nations and Islamic nations (many of which are democratic contrary to popular belief) will have to realize how to share the world with each other or we're going to blow each other off the map.

First, I really appreciate someone who likes to look at history for possible answers to today's problems. That being said, there is one problem with your premise. 9/11 was more the result of the extremism of certain Islamic sects that feel any American involvement, including simple trade or economic support, is wrong. Many of these people will preach Holy War, to fight against "western" interests which they feel is contrary to Islamic Laws and Rights. America has been involved in numerous affairs throughout the world since the end of World War II, and these extremists feel that striking their chief enemies (the west) by using violence will make us go away. 9/11 was the result of these teachings and thus came the retaliation from the U.S. and our allies. So, the answer to your first two questions are: U.S. and middle eastern nonsense really weren't the problems, and Bush's vacation had less to do with it than the general false sense of security that had arisen since the end of the Cold War. The problem with a withdrawal is two-fold. First, a total withdrawal will result in these already unstable countries slipping back into the hands of these extremists that our people have fought and died to eradicate. Secondly, sudden withdrawal appears to be a failure, and with our current appearance to the world, this would be a very bad PR move, like it or not. Great question!

Good question. You are correct also that 9/11 was a retaliation for american involvment in the middle east. American politicians conveniently never mention all the US meddling in various countires for many years before 9/11. Although war seems senseless and to start a war is a terrible crime, the US is guilty of that, particularly in Iraq. The point of the war though is continued expansion of american power and dominace throughout the world. Look at a map and see how many american bases there are all over. I have never been afraid of flying though. Your chances of dying there are less than driving a car. Go to London.

What you are not getting in your equation is that in absence of Western influence they still proceed to blow themselves up and everyone else around them and we're in a state of globalization where "across the world" isn't so far anymore. America wasn't birthed on isolationism. Read OUR Declaration. We're not about to quit now and I'm definitely not going to take the excuse (which is the same excuse that terrorists use) that because America influenced other parts of the world that it gives terrorists a right to come here and blow us up and continue to blow everyone else up. The world is much smaller now. In an wink of an eye we can share information globally. I'm in Mississippi, where y'all at? It isn't the fact that we influenced any non-Western countries, because even in that absence it would then be an excuse that we are talking now on the internet about "them" and that we have the freedom to do it. It is the fact that we have freedom and power to live, feel, breathe and be not just non-Islamic, but their version of Islam, and they want it otherwise America fights wars based on FREEDOMS. We have more allies than Britain who are fighting with us from the West. Go Germany, go France and the rest of our ISAF troops who are doing a great job under tough circumstances! We have allies in the Muslim world who are fending off this terrorism as well in their home countries. The terrorists have already requested a nuclear suicide bomber, and while some of you guys are figuring it all out, still stuck on "appeasing terrorists" or thinking it is "perfectly okay to let them blow others up" because they cannot attack us on our home soil again because "they will learn to love us if we just stay out of it" other people have already counteracting it, defending FREEDOM, and wishing you guys would get off your patoosh and come help us all out. If they watch your link, they will know why so many loved Reagan. Only the very far left liberal loons find fault with Reagan and pretend to this current generation that he was considered in the same light a Obama is now... a good talker without substance.
