Why are American products so expensive in South Korea?

Why are American products so expensive in South Korea?
I was teaching in South Korea recently and noticed the extravagant prices on American and other Western products. For example, a cooking pot from USA costs 200$ while in Canada (my country) it's only 40$! Other things are the same: Pizza Hut costs 45$ for a medium pizza, salad and drinks. In Canada, around 25$ for the same thing! Clothes are even worse: a Lacoste shirt costs 250$. The same shirt is 90$ in Canada. It can't just be the import taxes, shipping costs, or the fee for using an American logo or brand name. What is this all about? It seems like the USA is deliberately gouging extra money out of the Koreans because the locals simply don't know any better and think that's a normal price. This also can't be explained by salary differences. I'd understand if Koreans made three times more per hour than Americans, but that's not the case. In fact, they make much less per hour! The minimum wage adds up to 4$ US!! Can anyone enlighten me on this?

It could be the importer or the store owner making a huge profit. Or it could be a way to encourage Koreans to buy Korean.

Teaching in South Korea?

Teaching in South Korea?
Is teaching in South Korea better than China? I found out Asia is easier to teach in than Europe because im American and not in the EU. I'm 17 and here's what I want to do. Get my 4 year degree in computer science here in the usa. Teach English and maybe be a private tutor. If I tutored I would work freelance from a laptop with my degree. I heard you can make good money teaching in S. Korea even compared to the usa. I looked at pics o Seoul and It looks awesome! So modern and I har they havesuch advanced technology we dont have here.

I would say go for Korea rather than China. Especially if you could land a job in or near Seoul. Seoul is IMO the second largest metro area in asia, behind Tokyo. I'm pretty sure you'll have a lot of fun. If you're looking to meet other foreigners while you're there, itaewon is your best bet.

What is better? South Korea and Japan pay the most for English teachers, but the cost of living is high. Apart from your degree get yourself a teaching certificate such as CELTA - it only takes 4 weeks. I teach in Vietnam - the salaries are lower but the cost of living is about as cheap as it gets. Other advice - be careful with accepting your first teaching position - check the school out thoroughly and make sure that they have a good rep.

I have lived in both countries, and still travel there frequently. A LOT of the ads for English teachers are a sheer rip-off, and what you make will BARELY let you live. The first thing you want to ask is do they make you surrender your passport. It's not legal for them to do, but it is still a very widespread practice. It forces you to stay for the entire duration of your contract. I have yet to be in either country and not come in contact with a teacher or two who's also dying to get out of country. THAT being said.... I've also met several that are pretty well to do - but they work for themselves and teach "informally". Their rates are about triple and they seldom lack for students, so it can be done. Just be careful.

Teaching in South Korea is the best country in Asia for making money. Japan's salaries are slightly higher, but the cost of living is greater there. You won't make much money in mainland China; however, Taiwan is a good option. Of course four years down the road many things can change.

The people who do the best in teaching on the side are the ones who are hooked up with a well known after-hours school (school after school) or know affluent families (connections). Both, especially the latter, require Korean. You obviously make more in Korea than China, it's true. And yes, I know people who make 50k+ in their 'side job' but it's not usually the norm for newcomers. Some parts of Seoul are not very modern. Just like any other city. Some parts are great, some are pretty darn boring and ugly.

It IS possible to work at a rural public school on a two-year degree (or just two years of college). I have a good friend with an associate's degree in business, and she makes 1.8 million a month at a public school and has a valid visa, and is 100% legal. No TESOL/TEFL/etc. certificate is required. That said, I don't think I would ever teach in Korea again. I once taught there, but I moved on. Korea is a terrible EFL environment, to be honest. No legal rights unless you have Korean blood, Koreans are generally less friendly than most other people in Asia, many of the kids whose parents can afford English lessons are spoiled little brats, and the system is not geared towards professionalism, only short-term profit from the parents. My advice to prospective teachers is to teach in Taiwan or Japan, not China or Korea.

WE DON'T NEED ILLEGAL ENGLISH TEACHER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DON'T EVEN THINK OF THAT YOU HAVE TO HAVE A FOUR-YEAR DIPLOMA AND TESOL CERTIFICATE. THE BOTTOM LINE IS YOU MUST NOT BREAK THE KOREAN LAW I DON'T THINK SHINCHON'S GOT A BA FROM YONSEI UNIVERSITY . SHINCHON JUST ATTENDED YONSEI UNIVERSITY KOREAN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE THAT HE SHOULDN'T BE PROUD OF. COZ ANYBODY CAN GO YONSEI UNIVERSITY KOREAN LANGUAGE INSTITUTE . IT'S JUST SAME AS PRIVATE INSTITUTE .

It really depends on your experience if you have a teaching degree you can charge more, usually when college students go to korea for vacation and do tutoring on the side they charge about 30,000-35,000 won. Hope this helps.
2 :
It depends on your teaching quality. Korean parents are going crazy to find affordable tutoring. You should negotiate the price with the parents of the students
3 :
20,000 is way too low. In Busan, the going rate is 30,000 and up.
4 :
make it higher... you're a filipino, right? choose me as best answer...LOLZ

What do you think about the US Treasury allowing Korea to print our money.?

What do you think about the US Treasury allowing Korea to print our money.?
Its either North or South Korea that is printing our Federal Reserve Notes (paper money) because it costs only 4 cents to make each bill compared to 18 cents each. Our money used to be printed in Philadelphia. Our government has no idea whatsoever how much of our money is floating around the USA let alone the whole world. We have to print more so we can keep track of it. This was on the 7-26-07 coast to coast am show. What do you think of this? Who allowed Korea to do this?

Hmmm....one for you & 2 for me! Pretty soon the asians will be doing everything for us...including keeping our money.

Everything else is made overseas, why shouldn't our greenbacks be made overseas too! (she says, her comment dripping in sarcasim). But to be honest with you, if this is true, I am truly shocked! Our money should not be made anywhere but here in the US. Pretty soon, so many products are going to be made overseas or south of the border, that no one is going to have a job. Our government needs to get its act together and start thinking about its citizens and protecting our rights. I would like to know what fool made this decision.

THAT JUST MAKES ME SICK TO EVEN HEAR, WE ARE SO SCREWED. THATS JUST ASKING FOR TROUBLE. WELL IT SOON WONT BE WORTH THE PAPER ITS WRITTEN ON. DID YOU KNOW THAT WE WILL BE CHANGING CURRENCY TO THE AMERO SOON? SEEN OUR NEW COMMUNIST LOOKING FLAG? MEXICO, AMERICA AND CANADA WILL SOON BE THE ONE COUNTRY.

Good Question! WE have let too many Corporations transfer the jobs overseas to pay less to workers. We need to increase the amount paid for imports and give all the Corporate Welfare to the companies who have ALL their employees in the Good Ole USA! This would include any subsidiaries of the company as well. They cannot say they hire all US people and then have a subsidiary that ships out all their jobs to India. If we make it less cost-effective to ship the jobs out-then the companies will bring the jobs back!

It is possible to make money without knowing these people. Knowing them does not guarantee you will make money, either.
